Xbox One vs. PS4 (Part 1)

From today, we are just a mere four weeks away from the release of the first console of the year, PS4 and then just one week later is the Xbox One, so I figured I would compare the two from an analysis standpoint and determine a winner. This’ll be a four part series so I’ll be taking absolutely every part of each console into consideration. Also, for the purposes of this analysis, when I say exclusive, it means that it won’t be coming to the other console. For example Titanfall is an exclusive to Xbox One, even though it’s coming to PC as well. Same goes for PS4 games like Blacklight: Retribution. First up to bat is Xbox One. Here’s a list of every single game coming to the console day one.

  • Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag
  • Battlefield 4
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts
  • Crimson Dragon
  • Dead Rising
  • FIFA 14
  • Fighter Within
  • Forza 5
  • Just Dance 2014
  • Killer Instinct
  • LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
  • LocoCycle
  • Madden NFL 25
  • NBA 2K14
  • NBA Live 14
  • Need for Speed: Rivals
  • Powerstar Golf
  • Ryse: Son of Rome
  • Skylanders: Swap Force
  • Zoo Tycoon
  • Zumba Fitness: World Party

That’s quite a few games but as everyone knows it’s exclusives that matter so we’ll bring that list down to a top five, all of which being exclusives. Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, Killer instinct, Crimson Dragon, and finally Ryse. One thing I really like about their launch lineup is their diversity. Within that list, there are 4 different genres of games. That’s something that is really nice to have in your launch lineup. So let’s break down these games and how well I think they’ll do.

RYSE

Ryse has a lot of good things in the game, unfortunately from what I’ve seen and the general consensus around analysts is that it’s just not quite there. They are making quite a bit of changes to game and hopefully all of the issues will disappear from the final game. With this info, I think that Ryse will be a good game, not a great one. I predict somewhere between 7-7.5 in the review scores for this game. Nevertheless, that’s a good score and probably a game you should pick up if you can.

dead-rising-3-game

Dead Rising 3 should be great. This is definitely their flagship game to me for their launch lineup. I think it made a lot of improvements from the second iteration, which includes the map size, graphics, and the amount of zombies on screen. This game looks really fantastic and it should score really well in the reviews. From what I’ve seen, it looks like the reviews will range from 8.5-9.5.

Killer-Instinct

Killer Instinct is interesting. Everybody thought it was going to be a free-to-play game but according to the developer it is, “The world’s most generous demo” except not really because you only get one character for free and the rest you have to pay for. Despite that, everyone who has played it has said great things about it, but the fact that people were thinking it was going to be free and it isn’t, kind of puts a damper on it. The scores for this game are looking to be from 7.0-8.0

Crimson-dragon6

Crimson Dragon is one of those cool arcade games that constantly gets overlooked somehow. I’ve seen a few gameplays for this game and it looks super fun and something I could have a great time with. It’s an arcade game so it shouldn’t cost much and it’ll be a great addition to your collection this holiday. I predict somewhere between 8.0-8.5 on this game.

93d4dbae-f75c-4474-8e7b-0227bd818493

Finally, Forza 5 Motorsport. Does anything really need to be said? The game looks phenomenal and it’s pretty much a must own. The reason why I don’t think this is the flagship game is that driving isn’t as big a genre as action/adventure games so Dead Rising 3 will have a bigger audience. Regardless of sales I think that Forza 5 will score between 9.0-10.0.

Xbox One has a strong lineup in it’s top five but outside of that, Zoo Tycoon, Powerstar Golf, Lococycle, and Zumba Fitness: World Party are nothing to get excited about. Everything else is also coming to PS4 so I won’t include those in my final opinion. Finally the PS4 launch lineup.

  • Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag
  • Battlefield 4
  • Blacklight: Retribution
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts
  • Contrast
  • DC Universe Online
  • DiveKick
  • Escape Plan
  • FIFA 14
  • Flow
  • Flower
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us
  • Just Dance 2014
  • KIllzone Shadow Fall
  • Knack
  • LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
  • Madden NFL 25
  • Minecraft
  • NBA 2K14
  • NBA Live 14
  • Need for Speed: Rivals
  • Pinball Arcade
  • Playroom
  • Putty Squad
  • Resogun
  • Skylanders Swap Force
  • Super Motherload
  • Switch Galaxy Ultra
  • Tiny Brains
  • Warframe
  • War Thunder

What was that about PS4 not launching with any games? There’s so many games of different genres it’s ridiculous honestly. Again I’ll bring it down to a top 5 list to make it easier. Killzone Shadow Fall, Knack, Resogun, Contrast, and Blacklight Retribution are my top 5 on this list. Now let’s break these games down.

Contrast-Package-Art

First up is Contrast. It’s a crazy artistic game that was just added as a free game when you buy PS Plus. Contrast is a game where you basically use your own shadow to traverse your environments and it’s a great twist to regular platforming. It looks fantastic and should be a great game. Like I said, with the news of the delay of Driveclub, Playstation announced that Contrast would take the place of that, thus it’ll be free. The review scores should be around 8.0-9.0 for this game.

RESOGUN-PS4-0005

Resogun is also going to be a fantastic game. It’s basically the sequel to Super Stardust which was already awesome and I think Resogun will be even better than that. You also get this game for free when you buy PS Plus, which I would recommend you do for some great deals. Review scores should be around 8.5-9.5 for this one.

9cdf8b3bd3fd311f1a7d4f40ff7a716a311

Blacklight: Retribution might not be a top 5 for everyone but to me, it absolutely is. I’ve watched so many gameplays of this particular game, it is mind blowing. I’m looking forward to it so much and it is a free-to-play game that does NOT require PS Plus to play online. Doesn’t get much better than that. People might not love it as much as I will so I see the review scores being a bit lower than others, meaning it’ll be around 7.0-7.5.

Knack-Robot-and-man

Knack I didn’t like at all…at first. Then I starting researching certain things about, watching gameplays and I got more and more intrigued by it. Sure, it’s a simple game but it’s just meant to be for fun and I think it’s a great alternative since games have been so serious lately. Sometimes it’s nice not to have to see blood splattering everywhere on the screen. Scores for this should be around the 7.5-8.0 for this one.

Killzone-Shadow-Fall-4

Finally the flagship game for Playstation’s lineup, Killzone Shadow Fall. This game has so much potential it’s insane. With Warzones, which let you fully customize the game mode to whatever you want, this game could last for literally forever giving endless replay value. The multiplayer will run at 60fps despite all of the people who will not accept that fact. There’s really not much else to say that you haven’t already heard. I predict the scores to be around 9.0-10.0 for Killzone.

It’s funny how you come into something with one idea and exit with another. I came into this fully expecting to write that Xbox One is going to win at launch hands down. With that said, the delay of Driveclub just reminded of all of the free games I’m getting at launch with the PS4. Even if I don’t purchase a retail game at launch, I’ll get Contrast, DC universe Online, WarFrame, War Thunder, Blacklight Retribution, and Resogun all for free. Contrast and Resogun require you to have PS Plus to get them for free but if you’re buying a PS4, there’s a good chance you are buying PS Plus. If you aren’t, you still get the others for free and you can play them online without the need of PS Plus.

The argument that PS4 has many indies is very true and those who put that into a negative light are really missing out on some great games. Xbox One has a few more triple A developer games coming at launch, and that’s fantastic, but here’s the reason why I’ll be choosing PS4. If PS4 wasn’t coming with any of those free games I previously mentioned, I would say Xbox One wins but fortunately for Playstation, it comes with free games, and quite a few of them. Thus, my decision was basically made for me.

Winner: PS4

PS4 comes away with a very, very slight win this week. Xbox One barely lost and those top five games should fantastic. Despite PS4 winning, I don’t think either console has a killer game that completely dominates the other ones. PS4 wins at launch, but we’ll have to wait and see if they can keep it up. Please keep in mind that all of this is just in my opinion and you are completely free to disagree and if you do, please leave a comment and I’ll reply accordingly. I’ll be back next week for part two of this four week series. Thank you for reading and please follow all of my social outlets to keep up to date. Also there’s a poll beneath this, so why not vote on it and let me know what you think?
